I bet that is two thing you never thought you would hear together? Rattlesnakes and Breast Cancer Awareness Month, huh? Well fun fact, Copperheads, Southern Copperheads (Agkistrodon contortrix contortrix) are contributing to breast cancer research! There is a protien in their venom that inhibits the growth of breast cancer. I share this every year, I find an article or the study to share. But today when I found the study, I scrolled and read it again and then kept scrolling and realized exactly how many more studies this one lead to or was related to. So click here to go to the original study, but take a moment to scroll down and see just a handful of things we have learned from our venomous animals.
#RattlesnakeFriday is a hashtag made to raise awareness about the need for conservation of ALL venomous animals. While we may mostly highlight rattlesmakes, you might see some other stuff smattered in.

Each month like clockwork, five dollars disappears. I never really miss it, I get an email telling me it is gone. I am a Bronze Sustaining member of USARK. In total, it is $60 per year to them, a little more than regular bronze and it is a little more than two tacos a month for me so I never notice. USARK is essential to our community.

Cindy holds the boa after getting it out of the engine in the background before sending it on it's way to animal control.
My rescue is not a normal one. I don't just take animals and then adopt them out to new homes. I also provide other services for shelters and this is where life gets fun. So I pulled into my overnight client's driveway, pulled the wireless charger off my phone and noticed I have a few messages. I slapped my case on and opened my messages just as my two dogs bounded in, causing chaos, only to see a message from Karen, the director of our largest animal control facility, sent at 4 pm on a Sunday of a holiday weekend. Yeah, I called her. Karen only uses the actual phone in emergencies; otherwise, she uses Facebook, and she only contacts me for emergencies. Otherwise it is Pete. Because, you know, it's a holiday weekend and we work with animals and never take days off.
The text was simple.

The International Herpetoligcal Symposium turns 50 this year and kingsnake.com will be there to help them celebrate as a returning sponsor to kick off our 30th year! We all are celebrating.
This year is going to be located in a true herpers heaven, The Chiricahua Desert Museum in Rodeo, NM. If you have never been to an IHS event, let me tell you that you are missing out. IHS is more than just talks, altho they are a big part of it and I have been honored to be a speaker twice! IHS is a gathering of people from all areas of our community. It is more than what we see at the expos. When you go ro IHS you get everyone, you get the legendary herpetologists that you read books by, the breeders who started the field, the zoo keepers who are doing amazing work and also the actual scientist mingling with the deli cuppers and the kids who are just getting their start.
