Zoo Med
REPTICAREŽ Ceramic Heat Emitters
CE-100,CE-150
Reviewed by: Jeff Barringer

We purchased one of these units (100w) and received another as a test sample(150w) from the manufacturer.

We are currently using these to provide a radiant hot spot for our tortoises at night. They work well and have functioned without trouble since implementation. We have used them both in off the shelf hardware store fixtures as well as fixtures specifically designed for pet use.

As with a light bulb, ceramic heaters radiate heat
in the direction that the fixture unit is pointed.
Unlike light bulbs, they do not generate any light
energy so it is more difficult to center, and to frankly see when the unit is functioning.

We found that in practice this could be dangerous, as we often noted ourselves checking to see that the unit was functioning by placing a hand close to the fixture and checking its heat. In one instance shortly after turning the unit on, this tester mis-identified the amount of time required
to heat up and burned his fingertips checking to see that the unit had powered up.

This may lead users to do the same or not being able to see the radiated cone of heat, may misjudge it's effect and place the unit too close to the animals or caging materials. Users of ceramic heaters should be aware of these issues when considering placment to lessen the chance of burns or fires. Additionally users should consider some type of caged fixture to prevent animals or objects from touching the surface of the emitter
to lessen the chance of serious burns or fire.

This unit has performed as expected and is reccommended for anyone needing a source of radiant heat when ceramic heaters are applicable.

PROS:
Durable, Water resistant, Works with standard light fixtures, Emits no light so great for night use

CONS:
No way to tell when unit on
