Why Kingsnake.com still matters
Before social media became a source of reptile-related knowledge, Kingsnake.com offered a more direct exchange of information and ideas. Observations, husbandry discussions, shared data, and organized write-ups were posted there and preserved over the years. For those newer to the hobby who have known only social media, that archive offers a window into those earlier conversations.
Rediscovering the Candoia archive
A recent experience made me pause and reflect on how far we’ve come—and sent me back to a memory from 2009.
On June 27, 2009, Jerry Conway drafted a paper titled “The Candoia Page: Boas of the South Pacific.” He identified a number of separate sub-species within the Candoia group, and I was searching for details on one in particular: Candoia aspera. I lurked on the forums in those days, with little to contribute on the subject, but the paper stayed in my memory. Years later, that memory—fuzzy as it was—gave me enough of a starting point to focus my search.
Now, in October 2026, my passion for Candoia is still going strong, and I’ve had some initial success producing a litter of viper boas. By nature, I’m a data glutton: when something captures my interest, I seek out every bit of information I can find. Candoia was no exception. I had a copy of Jerry Conway’s online ‘book,’ but I’d lost my hard copy, so I went looking for it again. I found the material alive and well, along with countless posts from across the years about breeding and keeping the species.
