:That just sounds crazy! I'm sure that that is way excessive. That is probably equivalent to a large rat! How is his stomach taht big? He must be at least full grown as in more than 2 years! That sounds more like what a large monitor would eat..Mine is 4-5months probably and he only eats like 1-2 pinkies every other day. If hes eating one rat a day (equivalent) how much does he $hit out? When I get a full grow I plan to feed around 2-3 mice every other day...You need to give him enough time to digest food, most reptiles need time in between to heat up and digest their food..If your over feeding him maybe he isnt digesting everything correctly and it just all coming out poorly digested....Also think about it...If he were in the wild, could he really have that much access to food? Even if he did he would be active all day looking for it....
:Tell me what you think

::My one tegu is almost a year old. He will easily eat two chicks and anywhere from four to six large mice a day. Is that excessive or about average?

Well, he poops daily and it is well formed. He eats in the morning like between 6:30 and 7:30, so he has all day to digest.
I really believe he's digesting the food properly because of his growth rate. When he stands, his stomach doesn't look out of proportion to the rest of his body. Of course when he's basking and his belly is flattened out then it looks large. So, I don't know. He'll be a year old the 26th of May. Sometimes in the afternoon he will jump and claw around until someone gives him a little more food, then he seems content. I do agree though that he probably would not get that amount in the wild.
Take care,
Karen
