I've been using it for a couple of years now and can really get young newts or larva off to a good start. Beef heart freezes well and is a good food when your other sources dry up (black worms, night crawlers). I find in the winter, if I can't get worms or crix....beef heart is in the freezer.
Shrimp...sounds cool. Expensive only if your going through pounds of it;) Hey Nate...what are you feeding 4 foot amphumias:o I bet I can make a pound go a long way with shrimp.

I have found shrimp pellets are ok periodically. My Pleuros seem to gorge themselves and get bloated from them. I had to isolate one female until she "passed" all the shrimp pellets. After one week...she was back to normal. I had to change the water in her small tank almost daily. A newt can't overeat like a mammal can, the pellets seem to expand after eating.
