Snapping turtles are common in the DFW area and may be more abundant than most people are aware of. However, it is this time of year when reproductive activities occur and that could be a partial explanation as to why the turtle was out and about. Another explanation could be all the rain we've recently received. With all of th added flooded ditches, etc there very well could've been the chance that the turtle was simply exploring a bit when conditions favored that activity.

As far as what to do. I recommend releasing the turtle into a nearby permanent body of water. The sooner the better for you and the turtle.

: I rescued an older snapping turtle from a drainage ditch here in town. I would have left him alone but the neighborhood kids had discovered him and was throwing large rocks in on top of him. I feared for his safty as well as the childrens' safty. Now I need someone to tell me what to do with him?? Thanks Rafiki
