Remember that there is a LOT of variation in water snakes' colors and patterns. Some may be almost black while another of the same species might have bright colors. Really the only way to tell without pictures is to have you look at one of those guides, peterson's or conants or another. You might want to just invest the 20 dollars or less, I havn't bought a guide in years so I can not really remember, so you can have the guide with you in the field.
The "checkered" snake almost sounds like a Thamnophis sirtalis or proximus(garter or ribbon snake)...I am not sure which occurs where you live. Again, a field guide could solve the problem.
The snake with fall colors sounds like some sort of Nerodia as well, especially a subspecies of southern water, like the broad banded. Check the pic in my other post. Andy
