I'm currently in Nottingham (which after 4 years in Bangor where there's mountains and greenery is soul destroying - I plan to escape...) doing an MSc. It's not that hot for reptiles around here (unless you like terrapins) but luckily I'm not to far from my native (well, surrogate) Lincolnshire, which is FAR better. I've only been snakehunting there since '92 but the populations I know seem very healthy (they looked in better condition this spring than I've ever seen them at before). These pics were all taken this spring. We have some beatiful snakes round there, often copper or bronze coloured (in morning sunlight anyhow) and melanics are frequent on a site in the north west of the county. However, the most stunning adder I've ever encountered was at Parys mountain on Anglesey, I presume it was a male, it had a vividly black zigzag, exceptionally white lips, and was what can only be desribed as blue. Several of us saw it and there was no mistake, a grey shade of cobalt blue (if that makes any sense). It looked like brightly coloured velvet laying there peacefully under a gorse bush - and NO CAMERA! Unforgiveable.
