Teddy at 40 pounds gets handled on a daily basis getting carried
and picked up just like when he was a tiny youngster. He is
very accustomed to this, also rides in the van in a tub and
walks on the road with me better than any dog I've ever seen.

Handling depends on species, some are quite shy, some are supposed
to be a bold species, and then there are individual exceptions
in both categories.

Holding a tortoise still and petting it, might not be to its liking.
Mine likes having his head scratched but will arch up for the
scratching and continue walking. Lots of people hand feed theirs
and the torts come up and even climb on their feet (yow!).
I would say don't think of them as a cuddle/petting animal but
a respected companion that is accustomed to handling as needed
if they must go to the vet and be handled there, etc...
