I recently set out to start breeding rats and mice again. I haven't done this for years.
The set up was great. A friend sold me some of his old tubs and I set them up in the basement. My Siberian husky thought they were great fun. He even eventually knocked over 5 of the cages, letting out all the juvenile rats, breeders and a bunch of pregnant female mice. I think that I caught all of them.
Now 3-4 weeks have passed since the dog helped the rats escape. All the females have had the babies and they are boogie-hopping all over the cages. All over the basement too. Seems my friend neglected to inform me that the mice pups are small enough to slip through the holes in the lids. So I'm guessing there is about 10-15 baby mice running around in my basement.
It sure would be nice to just let out the snakes to take care of the mice. The ceilings are open in areas and the snakes have gotten loose up in there before when they were out for excercise. Took care of my wild-mouse problem back then, but I don't want to put my snakes at risk again. My neighbors think I should ditch the snakes and get cats instead. I'm not too sure how safe cats are, they seem so unpredictable around little children and babies. Besides, I'm not allergic to reptiles, but I'd never breathe again with cats!
