Mike, yes you do need a fishing license to possess any California native reptiles and amphibians. It is illegal to release any animal back into the wild once it has been in captivity. The snake wouldn't survive anyway. Try contacting our Adoptions Chair, Deb Hanney at 858-695-8170. She should be able to find a home for it. Mark
