:my turtle has asymmetrical scutes too and the reduced size of both eyes. he also has a really tiny tail that curls. i think he's just a genetic freak.

More than likely what you are dealing with is a birth defect. As to recessive genes and temperature variations, all this does is deligate wether or not you will have male or female of the species. Hope this helps..
