Yes they are a gravity feed type system...They are better than a lot for the biological reasons...Go to a store that carries salt water fish...I'm sure they will have one in use that you can see in action.. The Ehiem 2213 is not rated for high water flow...I tried using two 2217's on one of my tanks and gave them away...I just don't like they low rate of return... The biologic benefits they are suppost to have are lost to me due to the frequency of cleaning the media around it...The way they break it down, I believe, is this...With the 2213 you are at around a 1:4 ratio of exchange... This is why they are so slow...Most people I know that use them have multiple units or are using the larger sized ones...Hope this helps..
