mattshue-- In Minnesota, the Western Painted Turtles lay eggs in early June or so. Mating occurs as soon as they awaken from hibernation. The eggs that are layed that year were fertilized the previous year...or earlier. They usually hatch out in August, and in our part of the country, many of the hatchlings overwinter in the nest and emerge from the nest in very early spring. You're more than likely seeing egg laying activity, although they do like to move around a lot. I don't know what to tell you about the "trance" thing. Perhaps someone else can clarify that.
