We were just having this sort of conversation on Tortoise forum regarding pyramiding. Several folks observed that a bunch of young torts fed the same balanced diet in the same size portions still had several in the bunch that began to pyramid.

One possible explanation could be (possibly genetic) the way the the individual animal processes it's food. Some are able to handle protein matter better than others. This one may just be one that has a hard time processing and thus the shell deformity.

I have experienced this in my many years of raising exotic birds (parrots mostly) they all are on a balanced and healthy diet yet every once in a while I have one that responds to that diet with Kidney problems or fatty liver disease. Just a theory but something to consider.
