well, it was a nice spring day in the low to mid 70's(is that what you mean by conditions?). this was the only specimen of its kind that i saw. the area was a big cattle field where i usually look for snakes - lots of junk and debris lying around. there's a small stream that runs though this field coming out of the mountains. i was walking along the stream in a shaded area and turned over a piece of chipboard that was partially in the water. the salamander was resting underneath. it's very rocky and hilly in this area.
