:You cant just rely on the filter to clean out all the leftover bloodworms. You've got to siphon them out, or use a tucket baster to suck the uneaten food out. If you don't do this, water conditions will slowly (or quickly, depending on amount of uneaten food) get very poor. Also, make sure you have LARGE gravel (or even small peddles) in the tank - so that the newts dont injest little pieces while eating. A bare bottom even works just as well.

:Might help to know what kind of newt you have?

Might also help to know if the newt is camped out on land refusing to go into the water.
