I would recommend you stay with just about anything you would be willing to eat such as sunfish and catfish. If the item makes you gag 'cause it's foul, smells bad or is possibly toxic I would not consider offering it to my snakes. The reason I say this (besides the toxic part), even if the food is "OK" what goes in comes out - usually smelling worse and both you, the snake and others in the house will have to live with it until it's cleaned up!
An important note: I offer trout mainly because here on the west coast besides goldfish, I have really no other options. I beleive that trout are not a natural/normal food of water snakes. In fact I'll bet a lot more snakes are eaten by trout than the reverse! My first choice of feeder fish would be healthy catfish and the rest as variety only.
