Isn't that interesting? Tail autonomy in Nerodia makes plenty of sense given their activity patterns and habitat which make them exceptionally vulnerable to predators. I posted a few weeks ago on a sipedon almost snapping its tail off in my hand. It severed the bone and nerve tissue within the tail which caused it to go necrotic within a few days. I amputated the tail before releasing him.
I wonder if there is any difference between species in their ability to break their tails. I'd think the more diurnal and terrestrial species (sipedon, fasciata, erythrogaster) are able to twist it off a bit easier than most. N. clarkii, on the other hand, have well developed prehensile ability in their tails so I doubt they can part with it as easily. Very interesting to think about nonetheless.
