For the sake of argument I still consider erythrogaster as one of the LARGER types of Nerodia. In fact several authors, Rossman included have documented the Plain Belly group as one of the 4 largest species assemblages within Nerodia. Those large species assemblages include floridana & cyclopion, taxis, erythrogaster and rhombifera. If you want proof of this consult Conant and Collins. Within the latter cyclopion has a max of 45, rhombifera and erythrogaster are both listed as having a maximum size of 48”, floridana has a max of 55, and taxis has a max of 60”. You can also add sipedon and fasciata to the mix with a max of 42” however in several texts (If you want them I’ll supply them!) this maximum size is taken to be an extreme rarity. The average commonly stated for the fasciata complex is between 28-35”(6 books) and sipedon (7 books) is frequently sited as having an average sized maximum of 35-37”. That said the Greens, Diamondback, Plainbelly and Brown are the classic sighted large Nerodia! Bandeds and “Common” (According to SSAR 00) are right in the middle! So basically, erythrogaster is one of the LARGE Nerodia species.
