None of the islands I have made float, they're weighted with gravel to be stable enough to support branches, etc. Some can be planted if living greenery is desired. The bridge style is usually only a single sheet of plastic with the sides folded down to provide legs, the height adjusted to whatever you want.
I cut the plastic floor area wide enough to brace against the sides for rigidity. This leaves virtually the entire floor space exposed for swimming. Cut the ends out of a plastic shoe box, jam it into the tank, lay astro-turf on top and poke edges down to prevent it from slipping, is the same idea. Only the plastic sheet offers any size option. So, you can virtually make the land space as big as the entire tank bottom, cut a hole for access to the water (reducing available humidity) again any size desired AND put another "bridge" on top of the first making tiers which again increase floor space. I have also used this method to provide a dry "basement". At the moment they're used as tiers for hides and basking sites.
One 4ft x 8ft sheet costs about $20.00 and weighs about 2 lbs. It's smooth both sides with multiple ribs in the centre. Comes clear, white, green, red or black. Cuts easily with a razor knife.
