I assume then that the 2 species don't naturally inter-breed?

My babies are doing great. They get a couple dozen rosy red minnows from the pet store every other day, so they're comfortable making pigs of themselves. They've got a warm spot and a nice dry enclosure with a big, flat water bowI that they get to hunt in. would like to get them switched over to pinks at some point.

Has anyone fed new born watersnakes through the winter? I wonder how big they'll be (and how much I'll be spending on fish!) by next April? They'll be released at the point of their mother's capture in April - they will not be exposed to any other snakes, cages, equipment, food, etc.

:The difference between Northerns (N. s. sipedon) and Midlands (N. s. pleuralis) is mainly pattern. Midlands have 30 or less bands/blotches from head to vent while Northerns have more. Also, midlands have lateral blotches that are narrower than the light interspaces between them. As far as ventral pattern, Midlands usually always retain a pattern of paired half-moons while Northerns ventral patterns are more scattered or even totally absent.
:How are your babies doing for you?
