2" is not enough to dig a home in. A tunnel or burrow is what you want to be able to let your lizard dig.
Sand alone will not hold a tunnel. It will crumble and fall apart. If you get dirt, and it is rock hard when it dries a bit, you can soften it by mixing with sand. Keep flipping with a shovel until mixed. It should be moist, but not a mudpile.
Wild savs are found in many places, not just sitting on sand. I've never heard them called desert monitors.??
You don't need calci-sand. You are not feeding him sand. He gets calcium and so much more when he eats whole mice. Or from the powder you dust his bugs with. If your temps are good, sand, rocks, feathers, clay and bicycle parts will pass right through him with no problems. Impactions result from improper husbandry.
I am kidding about feeding bicycle parts.
