:Personally, mine does the same thing but calms down the second I pick him up. Yours might be different but it's worth trying once. 99% of them won't actually bite you when they strike, it's a hognose thing.

Well, I decided that I would go ahead and pick him up. Otherwise I might be intimadated and maybe never want to pick him up again. I have to admit that I put on a garden glove and reached in and picked him up. Whew! He did just what he was supposed to. Calm, no striking. Settled down and was his same old self. What an interesting animal. I have also decided that he really likes his enclosure. It's a 20gal long tank, aspen substrate (burrows everywhere) and a great stack up resin log from Petsmart that also has plastic flowers and grasses on it. It looks fantastic. It covers the whole back of the tank and he climbs on this and under this and seems to spend a lot of time in it. It has two holes in it and I stuffed them tightly with paper towels to make sure that he couldn't get up inside this decoration. I've read about people being unable to get their snakes out of these things. I really like him and so glad that he didn't win with his tactics. I'm a brave girl. hehe His name is Dakota and he is beautiful.
