So are you saying that the snake pictured doesn't have an orange belly? If it doesn't then I guess it could be a Sonora semianulata (ground sanke). Sure looks like a black headed snake though.

In any case, you stated that the hurt snake was kinked and very fat. It might have just made a meal of another snake. Ground snakes are documented as eating small snakes and even very small lizards. If it had eaten a snake it would be plump and with a snake crammed into its stomach it could look kinked.
Good luck with them. Make sure and give them loose soil to burrow in. They love to burrow and it makes them feel more secure. Also they like to hide under flat rocks. They also seem to like a little moisture in some of the soil.
