: Yeah, that's great. You can watch it be miserable longer.

Every animal deserves a chance, if it is not terminal and suffering. I don't believe this animal is in pain, and my vet concurs after an intensive examination this morning. Actually he thinks the little guy might stand a chance of making it since his basic systems all seem to work properly.

I don't stand to profit from this animal's survival or non survival. I'm acting as a volunteer caretaker and nothing more as it belongs to the zoo that received it. Whether it lives or dies, it will go on exhibit there. I'm just giving it the best head start possible, and every chance possible, because that's just what I do for snakes.

The other snake that came in over the weekend was an Eastern diamondback that had been struck on the head and sustained serious damage to the eye. The park's vet isn't really equipped to handle these kinds of cases so they are generally handed over to me. My vet volunteers some of his time to help me treat the injured wildlife cases like this, but I pay for the drugs and do most of the hands-on work for animals which end up re-released or donated to educational or research purposes.

I spend a hell of a lot of my time and money trying to give sick and injured snakes the best possible chance to survive. Making the decision to euthanize a suffering animal is a decision we have certainly had to make many times. There are ethical standards and criteria for making these decisions, one of them being a good professional assessment of the animal's condition.

Ignorant remarks by anonymous cowards on the Internet are no part of this criteria. If you have a professional opinion on the subject and a name to sign to your post, go ahead and offer your opinion. Otherwise, consider remaining silent.
