The Sandhills are the best herping area near Raleigh, in my opinion. Just take U.S. #1 South for about an hour and you'll be in prime herping country (that is, if you wait a few more weeks.) The diversity of snakes in this area is as good as anywhere in the state - hognose, canebrake, copperheads, pigmies, pines, kings, corns, etc.

If you enjoy seeing herps in the field and you live in NC, then "REPTILES of North Carolina" by Bill Palmer and Alvin Braswell is an absolute must. It includes distribution maps for each species found in NC as well as great habitat information, photos and drawings.

:I live in the Raleigh area of North Carolina and I was wondering if anyone out there could point me in the direction of some hot spots for Hognose,copperheads,etc. I see the occasional road side herp but I want to get out there this year and find and photo some really awesome stuff. Any help or guidance would be appreciated.feel free to drop me an email also if you live in the area.
