I think that is actually one of the best times of year for all around herping in southernmost Texas. It is still cool enough that you can find stuff under trash. And if it rains, you might get some good amphibians (Smilisca, Hypopachus, Bufo marinus, etc).

March is a little early for road hunting generally, but you can get some days up in the 90s which can lead to good nights. Daytime (morning) road hunting can be productive on quiet roads in southern TX as well.

South TX is where I usually spend spring break herping. Unfortunately, you have to deal with a lot of spring breaking yahoos, but otherwise it can be great fun.

Make sure you go to the Sabal Palm Grove Sanctuary. Easiest place to see Speckled Racers in my experience (of course, looking only, no collecting!).
Rose-bellied Lizards are really conspicuous at Santa Ana NWR as well, and it can be a decent place to see Indigos in the morning. Again, hands off, but if you want to see one, that isn't a bad place to start looking.
