What is this snake?

I was on a trip to Italy, and in the Alcantara gorge, I caught a small snake. It was maybe six inches long, and a medium gray with black stripes across his back. He seemed very docile, and I was just curious as to what it may be. I can't find any web sites that have Italian snakes on them.
