I don't think I'll ever tire of these incredible
animals.
the late Josef Laszlo once told me "Once herping gets
in your blood, it is there to stay". He was right.
I'll look forward to that picture and I'll tell ya how
I found that male.
Matts and Janni were visiting from sweden. Janni was riding with me.
I believe it was June 27th 1997, though I'll have to check
records.
The Christmas saw over 4" of rain in the early morning hours
that day. We started out there and saw nothing, so we headed
out to the R.R. . After many hours of cruising, and seeing
the usual assortment of trans-pecos animals, we headed off
the R.R. at 3:45 a.m. and made a slow pace towards the wildhorse
station. As I past our hotel room headed towards the xmas, janni
lifted his sleeping head off the door long enough to say "there
goes our hotel room", and I chuckled a bit saying "we need
to make another pass on the xmas".
The pass headed north netted nothing, and as I worked my way back
south at a turtles pace I recall seeing very slight head /neck
movement from this snake prompting me to stop in my tracks and study the source. It was 4:20 a.m.
The next thing I saw from 30 yards was a tongue flick. I knew what we had and told Janni to go get it.
Janni was most dissapointed to be awakend for in his exact words
"a sh!t snake". But what was more funny, his first step landed
him in 6" of mud. I could hardly contain myself when he started
cussing. My attitude changed a little when the snake turned to
go UP the cut and Janni was still fussing the mud.
He barely got the animal before it escaped his reach and I breathed a sigh of relief. I can still hear and see him
like it was yesterday.
Janni was/is a great herping partner, and brings me good luck.
I've got more funny stories concerning alterna I found and Janni,
but I'll stop here since this one you can relate to.
