The problem I've had with paper towels is that crickets hide under them. This makes it difficult for the hungry herp to find their food. It also allows roaming crickets to launch sneaky night attacks on unsuspecting lizards.
The original poster mentioned scraping the calcium sand, which is good as that stuff is a) dreadfully expensive and b) clumps like the dickens when wet causing impaction worries. I have always had success with plain old washed play sand ($3 a 50 pound bag at Lowe's). I keep a uromastyx, a bearded dragon, and 3 leopard geckos on sand without problems and have done so for over a year. My collareds when they arrive tomorrow (YAY!) will be on play sand also. I suggest using that.
However, if you are totally opposed to sand, I would use that green carpet stuff. It allows less cricket hiding spots and is easy to clean. That is what we used when our fat-tail was sick with good results.
