i might not be making this post quite as fancy as charm_paradise but im gunna say basically the same thing. no, chameleons are not a good first lizard. and no, they are not good for handling and no, chameleons arnt really 'tame'.
chameleons are more advanced lizards, i havnt had lotz of expereince but you do need a little bit.
some chameleons get used to handling, but many dont. handling chameleons supposidly shortens they life span by stress.
Chameleons are quite agressive reptiles, they hiss, gape, and bite.

im not stopping you from getting a chameleon, because i know the lil guys are so addictive. im just saying, start with a leopard gecko or bearded dragon, work your way up to more advanced species, then get yaself a lil veiled or panther, :)
