:Melamine holds up rather well but you should seal the inside with silicone on the edges. As for weight it is rather heavy an 8 x4 sheet which they are sold in weighs about 50lbs, but that is a guess.

Yes if Definately need sealing and very well ( apply a bead between the two surfaces when joining this will seal thw open ends of the melemine you can also paintthe end this will also aid in sealing it from moisture)
now as far as weight i would tend to say a 8x4x3/4" sheet would be pushing 80 lbs poss 90 lbs as 3/4 oak & birch weigh in at 78 lbs ea. ( i called manufacturer for weight for getting shipping for cages i build)
its a good straght surface , but if building long cages with this i highly suggest that you plan on builing the floor with cross ribs in it and make sure the top would have one as the weight of its self can cause it to sag alot within a shorter period of time then many think.
