Hi Dave,

Whenever I'm finishing a piece of wood with a new type of polyurethane I always find scrap pieces of different types and put coats on them without stain.

I do this primarily to have a test piece that I used to see how durable the finish is and how it affects the grain, but it also lets me know how different polyurethanes (oil vs. water - satin, vs. semi vs. flat) look on different types of wood without stain.

In a nutshell, they all look pretty good except for more knotty pieces of wood combined with high-gloss finishes.

I'm sure you'll have plenty of scrap leftover from your project so it's a good idea to practice anyways.
