If you've never kept snakes before, I would steer you away from the really big species, such as Burmese Pythons, African Rock Pythons, Reticulated Pythons, Anacondas, etc. They can be difficult to manage as adults and downright dangerous for beginners. Some smaller species are also better kept after you have some experience, too...such as Ball Pythons (IMHO), Blood Pythons, Emerald Tree Boas, Green Tree Pythons, Cook's tree boas, Garden tree boas, Sand Boas, Rubber Boas, etc. because of the strict environmental conditions that they require to thrive.

Better choices for beginners are:

1. Boa Constrictors...easy to care for, not picky eaters, and they don't normally get too big to handle.

2. Rosy Boas...can be a little snappy but the bite isn't serious and they are pretty easy to care for.

3. Rainbow Boas...same deal as Rosies.

4. A great many colubrid snakes, such as kingsnakes, milksnakes, rat snakes, etc. I realize they aren't boas or pythons, but they make excellent beginner snakes to teach you the ropes of herp keeping.

The above is only my opinion...your mileage may vary.
