:Look, I dont want to sound argumentative, but ruling out a ball normally is the best choice IMO. It is a preference, an opinion. It has nothing to do with experience. Captive bred balls CAN go off feed and some CB balls ARE picky feeders. But each snake is an individual, and some are just great feeders and captives. I do find balls more fussy in some cases than say a corn or kingsnake, not counting the normal colubrid brumation/off feed time frame that can be expected once a year. I have been catching and keeping snakes since I could walk. And as I said, everyone has their own opinion. If you think balls are a great starter snake go with it. If I want to suggest Rosy boas or corn snakes or kings instead of a ball, I sure as hell will because IMO balls can be finicky and IMO they make a better second snake after the person gets some experience under their belt.

:Best regards to you.
