I to had the same dilema when I first got into this hobby, and I can tell you that a corn is an excellent beginner snake. Very easy to take care of and great around kids. I did alot of reading about corn snakes first, such as "The Corn Snake Manual", by Bill & Kathy Love, and it answered alot of my questions. I am very glad I started with the corn snake and now I want to move onto the Ball Python. I would like to get a green tree python, but the price is a little bit up there, and they are a little harder to take care of. Start with a corn you will never regret it. Good luck with your decision.
