it's interesting... I've read of some suggestions that baby box turtles don't venture far from the nest for probably their first year of life. That would lend itself to them bumping into each other. My groups of hatchlings have fought or ignored each other, much like adults, but they just seem to be more active with another around. I could be off base, perhaps I'm missing some small change in my keeping of the last group and my current single. It's odd, though. I don't think I'd have called mine social, they certainly interacted by default (sharing food, sharing hiding spaces, sharing water, bumping into each other wandering), and they did fight plenty (but like kids they didn't seem to really hurt each other).
Anyway, maybe eventually I'll do a more scientific expirement with it, keeping identical setups with groups, pairs, and singles to see how active they are. Hard to quantify I guess.
