Any information about behavior during'population-explosions'

my father once related to me the story of a rampant 'population-
explosion' of snakes (i'm sorry, i don't recall what type...) in
rural Oklahoma during the 1950's. my memory of the account may
be simply "exagerated"... ...but he told me of "huge balls of writhing
snakes" clinging to the branches of the trees of one particular
farm, not far from his home.
Can anyone tell me if this is "normal" or "unusual" snake
behavior? What normally causes such a population increase?
And perhaps you have some idea why they should congregrate
in such large numbers up in the trees?
Any thoughts or source material would be appreciated.
