2010 Spring Field Meet

The Angelina National Forest

The 2010 THS Spring Field Meet will be held April 16th-18th in the Angelina National Forest in Angelina, Nacogdoches, San Augustine and Jasper Counties.  The forest is located just east of Lufkin and surrounds Lake Sam Rayburn.  It is over 150,000 acres of pine forest (longleaf, loblolly, shortleaf) interspersed with bottomland hardwood forest and aquatic habitats (swamps, creeks, the reservoir).  For more information about the National Forest itself, please check the following link:

Boykin Springs Recreation Area will serve as the base for the field meet.  Camping will be $6 per night for a campsite.  This area can be accessed from State Highway 63.  Two vehicles and two tents or one RV may occupy a single campsite.  Boykin Springs has showers, bathrooms, and a pavilion.  This is the only site on National Forest Property with showers.  There are twenty-one pull in campsites and three tent only sites.  At this time of the year, camping is allowed literally anywhere on the National Forest except for a few designated restricted areas.  Therefore, if Boykin Springs fills up, other meeting participants can camp at Caney Creek, Sandy Creek, or Bouton Lake Campsites. All these sites are primitive camping and have no running water.  Camping at Bouton Lake is free and the site is within eight miles of Boykin Springs.  There are numerous motels and hotels in Lufkin for those not interested in spending nights out of doors.

The herp list for the property is extensive and if the weather cooperates, we should be able to find a great diversity of species.  A full list of all the herps reported from the forest and contained counties will be posted in the weeks to come.
