RED-EARED SLIDERS: No more permits are being issued to own red-eared sliders. The state is encouraging euthanasia. HOWEVER, thanks to Pete Richardson, there is a place where they can be shipped. This is from The Turtle and Tortoise Club's July Issue: "Stacey Vajanyi and I (Marvin Bennett) have been collecting red-eared sliders from pet owners who could not or choose not to keep them anymore. These pet owners have paid us a small fee to ship these turtles to Oklahoma, ‘their home range,'. It is good to see the previous owners doing the right thing instead of dropping them in their local lakes. This is a program set up by myself and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission." If you have or know of someone who is wanting a new home for their red-eared slider, please contact Marvin Bennett at 407-851-0198 or Stacey Vajanyi 321-961-0050.
REPTILES OF SPECIAL CONCERN: The state requires you to have a permit to own Burmese pythons, reticulated pythons, African rock pythons, amethystine pythons, green anacondas, and Nile monitors. To get this permit, please go to www.myfwc.com to get the application. By getting this permit, you agree to microchip your animal once it reaches 2 inches in diameter, and to use properly secured enclosures that will prevent the animal's escape.
Suncoast Herpetolgocial Society cannot put up ads for Reptiles of Special Concern. We are not legally permitted to do so. However, if you need to find a home for your ROC reptile, please email Carrie and I will see what I can do.
Please note, that the ads for animals and equipment will now stay up for a period of 3 months. If you still have the animal after that amount of time, please email Carrie and the ad will be reposted. AS OF JULY 1, 2007 WE CANNOT ACCEPT RED-EAR SLIDERS UNLESS WE FIND A PERMITTED RESCUE FOR THEM TO GO TOO. KEEP THAT IN MIND BEFORE REQUESTING AN AD BE PUT UP FOR RED-EAR SLIDERS.
