Choke Canyon | Seminole Canyon|

2009 West Texas Campout|

The South Texas Herpetology Association periodically sponsors fieldtrips / campouts during the year. All members and their guests are invited to attend these events. The Association will pay the fees for campsite usage at each event, and members and their guests will be responsible for providing their own camping gear, food, etc.

We have set the dates for the Pandale Field Trip. The dates are May 14-16, 2010. More information on this trip will be posted as they become available. Check back often for more information.

OCTOBER 16TH AND 17TH, 2009 West Texas Campout

We moved the location of the fall camping trip to "FLAT ROCK CROSSING". It is 24 miles north of Langtry. This location is on the river, we were able to swim, fish and collect reptiles on the site.

They have cabins ranging from $50.00 to $170.00 per night with different levels of amenities.

The club paid for tent sites, but if you wanted to stay in a cabin you had to pay for that yourself.

Day at the Zoo

April 7, 2007  San Antonio, Texas

It was cold, (38 degrees) and raining and yet 24 people showed up for a trip behind the scenes of the San Antonio Zoo reptile house.

We toured the reptile house first, looking at the new venomous acquisitions from Mexico.

After that we divided into two groups and one half went to the Komodo Dragon building. The female, which is very docile (see picture below) is approximately 6 1/2 feet long and the male, which is very aggressive is between 8 and 9 feet long.

The other group went to the Amazon area and got to see the giant Japanese Salamanders.

After awhile the groups swapped areas.

We also got to see the incubating Komodo Dragon eggs, (they look like polished stones) and found out the eggs take about eight months to hatch. They are expecting them to hatch in October.

We had a great, informative field trip and wish to extend a special thanks to Allen and his staff for the tour.

After the tour the group went to the Picadillio Grill on Broadway across from the Whity Museum for an enhoyable Mexican lunch.

Report provided by Ed Lessard.

Seminole Canyon State Park

The September, 2005 field trip to Seminole Canyon was a lot of fun, all three campsites were full.

The herp hunting only turned up a couple of western diamondbacks and a few geckos.

We had a few new members present and some perspective new members also were in attendance and they all had a great time.

Ed made French Toast and bacon for everyone on Saturday morning.

Ed also brought his boat and during the day Ed, Pete and Kevin were found on Lake Amistad looking for the elusive large mouth bass, and they even caught a few of them!

They even have guided tours of the Canyon. Click on the thumbnail for a bigger picture.

IMPORTIANT: REMEMBER THAT,

Herp hunting must be conducted outside the state park.

A valid Texas Hunting License is required to hunt snakes. Yes, you can KILL snakes without any license,, but,,,you must have a HUNTING LICENSE to hunt/collect snakes!

We hope that you'll join us for these outings.

Please sign up by completing and submitting a fieldtrip participation form at one of the regular meetings.

Completed forms can also be mailed to: STHA, 8023 Hill Trails, San Antonio, TX 78250-3008.
or Contact Ed at (210) 520-6101 and let him know you are going.

Have fun, and Happy Herping.

Note: Anticipated attendance for an activity will be determined by the numbers submitted on fieldtrip participation forms. If participation appears to be low, one or more of the reserved campsites may be cancelled to save money.
