This species is often confused with the sand monitor Varanus flavirufus.

This Picture was taken on the side of the Stuart Highway North of Katherine NT. The Lizard allowed me to approach close enough to take this picture before running away.

This monitor was found dead on the road north of Katherine NT and shows one of the problems with grabbing a meal on the roadway.
