South and West Alpine
Most alterna from this area have a
brownish-tan base color,
similar to the alterna and mottled rock rattlesnakes found in the Davis Mountains. If you
note the color of the rock here, you really appreciate how these snakes
have adapted to blend in. I have representatives from both six miles south and to the west of town in Presidio County. To the best of my knowledge, only a hand full of
people is working with this rare locality.
