Penang: Thousands thronged the Snake Temple in Bayan Lepas yesterday to give thanks and to celebrate the birthday of the resident deity Chor Soo Kong.
Devotees from as far as Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan came to pray on the sixth day of the first lunar month, offering incense, candles and eggs to the "snake deity.''
"Chinese consider Chor Soo Kong to be a very powerful deity who is able to grant wishes. That is why they take the trouble to come all the way here to pray, especially in this Year of the Snake,'' said temple trustee board member Cheah Jin Teong.
Singaporean Susan Tan said that this was an auspicious day to pray for health, wealth and prosperity, but was disappointed with the dwindling number of snakes.
The temple was built around 1850 in memory of Buddhist priest and healer Chor Soo Kong.
The statue of the deified healer was brought to Penang by a monk from China and his many healing feats brought about the building of the temple.
The temple will see a landmark event on Feb 4, when the one-ton bell will be struck for the first time in more than 100 years since it was brought from China.
Organised by the Penang Youth Clan Association Committee, the 1.5m-tall bell will be brought to the Armenian Street-Cannon Street historical enclave to sound off the Third Millennium Chinese New Year open house celebrations.
