Herping in Holland
Even when Holland is know for his cheese, Dijks and glocks (wooden shoes) do we have a small herpetofauna that can be found.
Our little country in habits 16 species of Amfibians and 7 species of Reptiles. Holland has only one native venomous snake and this is the European Viper Vipera berus.
Amfibians: Salamandra salamandra, Triturus alpestris, Triturus cristatus, Triturus helveticus, Triturus vulgaris, Alytes obstetricans, Bombina variegata, Pelobatus fuscus, Bufo bufo, Hyla arborea, Rana arvalis, Rana temporaria, Rana lessonae, Rana klepton esculenta, Rana ridibunda.
Reptiles: Anguis fragilis, Lacerta agilis, Zootoca vivipara (before Lacerta vivipara), Podarcis muralis, Coronella austriaca, Natrix natrix, Vipera berus.

Little red female Vipera berus. Vipers are found in many color
morphs true out there range.
This Viper is out of the same area and is the most common color morph found
in Holland.



Ring necked snakes Natrix natrix are the most common snakes found in
the Netherlands, they lay eggs in community breeding mouths in early spring.
These snakes play death when distrubed, they also have a musk smell when
botherd.
This is a typical habitat to find both Natrix natrix and Vipera
berus.
Green frog Rana klepton is often found in this area and the mainfood
of the snakes living here.
Common Green frog Rana lessonae was a common frog but his range is
getting smaller true pollution.
