LONGNOSE SNAKE Rhinocheilus lecontei Baird & Girard, 1853  

      STATUS:  Rare

      LOCALITIES OBSERVED:  Hood Co.:  5.6 mi SW of Cresson on US 377;  Parker Co.:  6 mi S of Weatherford on Tx 171, 3.5 mi NW of Cresson on Tx 171, and Rio Brazos Estates S of Weatherford;  Tarrant Co.:  Boaz Golf Course, Benbrook-Aledo Rd, near Benbrook Lake dam, and 4.8 mi SE of Wheatland;  Wise Co.:  7 mi N of Decatur

      DOCUMENTED COUNTIES:  Hood, Johnson, Parker, Somervell, Tarrant, and Wise

      HABITAT:  Fort Worth Prairie, Western Cross Timbers, Brazos River Bottoms, and Rolling Plains

      SUBSPECIES:  Texas Longnose Snake (R. l. tesselatus Garman, 1883)

      COMMENTS:  R. l. tesselatus should be much more common than these observations indicate in the western part of the Metroplex.
