Micrurus tener (Texas Coral Snake)

CORAL SNAKE Micrurus fulvius (Linnaeus, 1766) 

      STATUS:  Rare

      LOCALITIES OBSERVED:  Dallas Co.:  Florina Rd. near Mt. Creek Lake, Cockrell Hill area, and W of Cedar Hill;  Somervell Co.:  11.7 mi S of Park Rd. 21 on US 67 and 5 mi NE of Glen Rose at Mitchell Bend on the Brazos River;  Tarrant Co.:  Forest Park, Oakland Lake Park near the W shore of Lake Worth, and Rockwood Park

      DOCUMENTED COUNTIES:  Dallas, Ellis, Hood, Somervell, and Tarrant

      HABITAT:  Trinity River Bottoms, Mesquite Grand Prairie, and Cedar-limestone Hills

      SUBSPECIES:  Texas Coral Snake [M. f. tenere (Baird & Girard, 1853)]

      COMMENTS:  The Texas coral snake is vemonous and can be dangerous.  It has been found more commonly in limestone areas containing thick stands of juniper and Texas oak.
