RINGNECK SNAKE Diadophis punctatus (Linnaeus, 1766) 

      STATUS:  Uncommon

      LOCALITIES OBSERVED:  Collin Co.:  Brockdale Park area near Lake Lavon and 1 mi S jct County Rd. 531 near County Rd. 525;  Dallas Co.:  Seagoville area, Belt Line Rd. in the Addison area, and Spring Creek area N of Garland;  Hood Co.:  4 mi N of Thorp Springs;  Tarrant Co.:  3.4 mi S of Axle and Rivercrest Country Club;  Wise Co.:  3 mi N of Alvord and Lyndon B. Johnson Nat'l Grasslands NW of Decatur

      DOCUMENTED COUNTIES:  Collin, Dallas, Denton, Hood, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Somervell, Tarrant, and Wise

      HABITAT:  Western Cross Timbers, Trinity River Bottoms, and Blackland Prairie

      SUBSPECIES:  Prairie Ringneck Snake (D. p. arnyi Kennicott, 1859)

      COMMENTS:  The prairie ringneck snake is common in isolated pockets, but is rare over most of the Metroplex.
