TIGER SALAMANDER Ambystoma tigrinum (Green, 1825)

      STATUS:  Rare

      LOCALITIES OBSERVED:  Kaufman Co.:  .2 mi S of Tx 243 and 3.0 mi E jct Tx 34;   Tarrant Co.:  Canyon Corners Ranch W of Lake Worth

      DOCUMENTED COUNTIES:  Dallas, Kaufman, Tarrant, and Wise

      HABITAT:  Western Cross Timbers and Post Oak Belt

      SUBSPECIES:  Barred Tiger Salamander (A. t. mavortium Baird, 1850) and Eastern Tiger Salamander [A. t. tigrinum (Green, 1825)]

      COMMENTS:  The tiger salamander turns up in unlikely places occasionally such as roadside ditches, stock tanks, and temporary pools of water.  It is used as bait in the larval form with the unused individuals often being released in the first available water. There are no recent records for this species.
